Post Graduate Work Permit Canada
The Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) program in Canada offers international students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience after completing their studies at a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI). This permit allows eligible graduates to work in Canada for a specified period, providing them with valuable practical experience that complements their academic credentials.
Eligibility Criteria for PGWP
To qualify for a PGWP, international students must meet certain eligibility criteria, including:
- Completion of a Qualifying Program: Students must have completed a program of study at a Canadian DLI that is at least eight months in duration and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
- Valid Study Permit: Applicants must have held a valid Canadian study permit throughout their program of study in Canada.
- Full-Time Status: Students must have maintained full-time status during each academic session of their program, except during authorized breaks.
- Graduation Confirmation: Graduates must provide proof of completion of their program, such as an official transcript or letter from the educational institution.
- Application Timeliness: Students must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion.
- No Previous PGWP: Applicants must not have previously been issued a PGWP unless they have completed another eligible program of study at a higher level.
Duration of Work Permit
The duration of the PGWP is determined based on the length of the study program completed by the applicant. Generally, graduates are eligible for a work permit for a period equal to the length of their study program, up to a maximum of three years.
**Starting February 15, 2024, students who graduate from master’s degree programs of less than 2 years (8 months minimum) may be eligible for a 3 year PGWP.
Application Process
Applicants can apply for a PGWP online through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. They will need to provide supporting documents, such as a valid passport, study permit, and proof of program completion, along with the required application fee.
